MIAMI VALLEY SCHOOL CHALLENGE

We’re looking for area schools ready to reduce costs, greenhouse gas emissions and resources and engage their students while competing for cash prizes.


The Bring Your Green Challenge is open to area schools all year round from now through March 2025. Here's how your school can benefit:


  • Financial Incentives: $12,000 in mini grants and cash prizes are up for grabs!
  • Reduced Operational Costs: Save money through energy audits and operational efficiencies.
  • Engaged Students: Gamified online challenges educate and motivate students on sustainability.
  • Public Recognition: Get featured in press conferences and online directories.

You don't need to follow a specific order. Choose the steps that best suit your school's needs and timeline:

GREEN CERTIFY YOUR SCHOOL

(Anytime through March 31, 2025)


Join hundreds of businesses and organizations to reduce your environmental impact, save on energy and resources, and Green Certify Your School.

Suggested Leader: School administrator/ facility manager / staff.

Resources:

  • Free energy audits through the University of Dayton Industrial Assessment Center for first 10 applicants.
  • $3,000 in mini grants (up to $600 each). Fill in your funding request at the mini grant request form below with your budget and intended use.
  • Recycling grants to Montgomery County schools. See more here

ENGAGE AND EDUCATE STUDENTS THROUGH GAMIFICATION

(Anytime through March 31, 2025)


Invite your students to join hundreds of individuals taking BYG Greener Lifestyle Online Challenges. As your students register an account, they will join a competition that engages and educates through gamification. The program uses points, levels, badges, and leaderboards to incentivize students to read information, take quizzes, and commit to actions that promote sustainable practices. 


Through the program, students will learn about topics such as energy conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable fashion, among others.

FORM YOUR TEAMS & TAKE DESIGN CHALLENGES

Anytime After April 22, 2024


  • Students can join existing teams or create new ones at any point throughout the challenge.
  • Schools can achieve Green Certification at any time to unlock a powerful advantage: All team points will contribute to the school's overall score, allowing your entire district to compete for even bigger prizes!

  • 10 mini grants at $300 each to assist student teams. Email us below with your budget and intended use.
  • Student's Mentoring opportunities through the University of Dayton River Stewards team.
  • PD hours for high school teachers linking teaching to the energy field through Sinclair College. Five modules will be provided; Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology -about biophilic design- and Financial Literacy. More information to be released later.
  • Other Professional Development hours for participating teachers through Montgomery County Educational Services.
  • Field trips opportunities. More information to be released later.

AWARDS CEREMONY

(MAY 2025)

Top participants from all categories will be invited to attend the Awards Ceremony at Sinclair Conference Center. A total of $6,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to winning school, teams, and individuals.


Point Structure:

  • Participants can earn points online as they learn about the challenge, take quizzes, and commit to actions they choose from a wide range of options.
  • A large number of points will be assigned to the Design Project submissions uploaded by contestants to the site. 
  • Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges.

 

Winner Selection and Notification

  • Winners will be selected from all of the eligible contestants. A panel of judges will be selected by BYG in its sole discretion. Winners will be selected based on points earned during the duration of the challenge. The top 5 in each category will be further audited by the jury panel.
